I'M THE HERO OF THIS STORY

I'M THE HERO OF THIS STORY

I’m The Hero of This Story merges spoken word, embarrassing dance moves and accounts of failure to show what it is like to be a young millennial in modern Britain.

Roxanne unwillingly moved home, with a goal to be out and living independently within a year. She tells nosey family members and successful friends that she hasn’t moved out yet because she’d miss her dogs too much. No one is yet to ask her about her overdraft or her job rejections.

This is a show that uplifts and changes the stereotypes of young people by offering ways to shout back at a story that is unfortunately all too common. It’s not the avocados’ fault we have failed to launch.

Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and Jerwood Foundation’s Performing Arts Micro Bursary. Additional development support provided by The Marlborough Pub & Theatre, Cambridge Junction through Troop membership and the University of Chichester.

The performance has been supported through the Progression programme at Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre.

Special thanks to Hannah Jane Walker and Daniel Hills.

REVIEWS AND AUDIENCE REACTIONS

"Carney’s show is daring in its extreme consumption...The whole thing makes for a visceral experience that’s more about destruction than about hope...there’s a charming vulnerability to the show..." - Exeunt Magazine, 2018

“Brave, honest and charming.”

“mega relatable and witty.”

“[Roxanne] hits you hard too with emotional resonance that you’re not expecting.”
